Pirnmill is on the west coast of the Isle of
Arran, approximately 16 miles from Brodick, the main village on the island.
Pirnmill's post
office and village shop is a ten minute stroll along the road or the
beach.
A mobile butcher's
van visits the house every Thursday.
There is a well-recognised restaurant and church in the village.
The "local" -
Catacol Bay Hotel - is four miles to the north, offering a varied
menu and garden tables overlooking Kilbrannan Sound and Kintyre.

Arran is reached by
Caledonian MacBrayne car ferries from either Ardrossan to Brodick on
the MV Caledonian Isles (55 minutes) or Cloanaig to Lochranza on the
MV Loch Tarbert (30 minutes).
It is important to book your car on the Brodick ferry, especially
during the summer months (call 08705 650000 or visit
www.calmac.co.uk).
Bookings are not taken for the Lochranza ferry. |

Directions to the Back House from Brodick
From Brodick pier, turn right and follow the A841 through
Brodick. Shortly after leaving the village the road takes a sharp
right turn. Follow the B880 which is straight ahead on the crown of
the bend. Follow this road, called The String, for 5 miles over the
hill and down the other side. Go carefully so as not to miss a right
turn signed to Machrie and Pirnmill. This takes you for 3 miles over
Machrie Moor to the west coast where you turn right onto the A841 to Pirnmill. It is now 6 miles to the Back House. On passing the
village sign you will see on your right, surrounded by fields,
Bayview House and the Back House. Draw in behind the house. The
journey is about 30 minutes.
Directions to the Back House from Lochranza
Turn right off the ferry and follow the A841 for 6 miles. Having
passed through Pirnmill village, Bayview House and the Back House
are on your left, surrounded by fields. The journey time is
approximately 15 minutes.
Bus travel to the Back House
Visitors
using public transport will find that local bus services will drop
them outside the door. Just ask the driver for Bayview House.
The North Island bus service 324, which connects with all ferries,
leaves from Brodick ferry terminal. Foot passengers from Cloanaig
may take this service at Lochranza.
